Medicines are vital component of healthcare system worldwide for reducing morbidity and mortality related to illness.In order to ensure medicines continues to help saves lives and improve health, issues related to safety, quality, efficacy , equity to access and quality use of medicines (QUM) need to be addressed. In many parts of the world including Malaysia QUM is primarily a patient-oriented movement, with the documentation stressing the importance of patient-professional communication along with patient knowledge and understanding their medicines.
The launch of Malaysian National Medicines Policy (MNMP) in the year 2006 by the Malaysian government had become a major turning point for all partners in health to engage and address the importance of QUM in the society. Beside that the launch of ‘Know Your Medicines’ campaign by the Ministry of Health (MOH) had paved the way for better engagement with the society in addressing their issues related medication use.
Research evidences from international literatures had revealed that improving QUM in the society, the outcomes achieved will be socially and economically benefit to both, the society and the health care system.Over the last 12 years many research related to QUM in Malaysia had been conducted by many division of stakeholders yet there is no local forum to share the findings and plan future inititiaves within the context of QUM.
In response to this, the 1st Conference on Quality Use of Medicines with the theme “Empowering Sustainable and Quality Use of Medicines In Society
Objectives of QUM2013
. To promote quality use of medicines in Malaysia towards achieving the goals of the National Medicines Policy.
. To share research findings and policies related to quality use of medicines among all stakeholders.
· To provide a forum for collaboration and networking among stakeholders in order to improve quality use of medicines in the community.
